You are fascinated by Japanese culture. You love manga, Takeshi Kitano movies and martial arts. The designers, architects, novelists and painters have an originality and a force in expression that astonish and amaze you. The perfection of the least craftsmanship fills you with admiration and respect. And yet you stop at the threshold of language and writing, convinced that there is a world in which you can not enter. What a mistake! With Japanese, an invitation, you will pass this barrier that you have set up before you and you will find that your first steps are easy, fun and rich of discoveries. Without being aware of it, you will acquire the essential notions, you will know what is a kanji or a kana, you will be able to consult a dictionary and to locate you in the streets, but especially this familiarization with the language and the writing will make you consider Japan and its culture in a totally different way. The authors of the book, Jean Mathieu and Colette Batsch, were themselves blocked, and when they came to grips with it and felt the intellectual excitement of deciphering a language so different from ours, they have had only one desire: to share with others their pleasure by tracing the road. Their personal experience, their scientific training and their pragmatism enabled them to draw up the vademecum which they themselves wished to have. This is the originality and interest of their approach.
